Responsibility to Readers

With the recent online posts, about how much writers read, it was interesting to hear what others thought on the subject of their reading. As I mainly write for children, apart from some short stories and poetry, I have always been aware of the message my writing is giving to those who read my books. This is something that concerns me, whilst striving to provide a good story, for I distinctly remember how the books I read in childhood supported or terrified me. I wonder if your reading has had a lasting effect on you? However, the recent Carnegie Medal, voted for by children, seemed to break all the rules.
